tragedy two-step

I’ve been assigned to cover Brooks Mitchell’s funeral on Wednesday.

Now begins the time-honored dance between reporter and editor in which I attempt to get out of it. Not because Brooks wasn’t an amazing man who deserves first-rate coverage of his life and accomplishments, but because I planned to go to that funeral as a civilian, as a friend, not as a reporter with my pen cocked and notebook ready. Sometimes we have to take a minute to just be human, to go through life’s experiences without seeing them through a journalist’s eyes.

This funeral is going to be difficult enough without having to worry about finding someone who’ll talk on the record through their tears.
